Emotional triggers travel through the senses, often faster than conscious thought can narrate what is happening. That is why a person can be sitting in a meeting, standing in a grocery line, or driving down a familiar street and suddenly feel flooded with anger, dread, shame, or panic. It was not the environment that became dangerous in that moment. It was their nervous system that recognized something—some sensory cue—that resembled the past, and it acted to protect.
